  24. - 1.  SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  25. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  26. Warcraft has a minimum requirement of DOS 5.0 or better.  It requires
  27. a 100% IBM PC compatible with a 386 microprocessor or better and a
  28. VGA monitor.  Your system should have at least four megabytes of
  29. total memory.  Warcraft will use either EMS or XMS memory and does
  30. not require any special memory drivers other than HIMEM.SYS.

  34. - 2.  SETUP AND LOADING
  35. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  36. To install Warcraft, type "INSTALL [Enter]" at the DOS prompt 
  37. and follow the onscreen instructions.  
  38.  
  39. To run the game, type "WAR [Enter]" at the DOS prompt.
  40.  
  41. If you change your sound or music card, you can reconfigure Warcraft
  42. using the setup utility.  Go to the WARCRAFT directory and type 
  43. "SETUP [Enter]" at the DOS prompt.

  47. - 3.  HOTKEYS
  48. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  49. The keys listed below are shortcuts which provide additional
  50. functionality during game play.
  51.  
  52. F1 or Alt-H        Help
  53. Shift F2 - F4      Save map position for immediate recall
  54. F2 - F4            Recall saved map position
  55. F5                 Display overview of map
  56. F6                 Display Unit Screen (shows units in play/units destroyed)
  57. F7                 Economy Screen (Lists total resources harvested)
  58. F8                 Score (This is an indication of your success,
  59.                    including your rank and current mission objectives)
  60. F10                Options Menu
  61.  
  62. G                  Shows the building grid for structures
  63. C                  Centers map on selected units
  64. Ctrl-M or Alt-M    Music (toggles between ON/OFF)
  65. Ctrl-S or Alt-S    Sound Effects (toggles between ON/OFF)
  66. Ctrl-X or Alt-X    Exit the program
  67. Ctrl-Esc           Disconnects the systems in two player mode

  77. - 4.  UNIT MODIFICATIONS
  78. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  79. Both Catapults and Summoned Creatures operate in manners dissimilar
  80. from other units in the game:
  81.  
  82. The catapult will attack enemy units automatically ONLY if there 
  83. are no friendly units that will be effected by splash damage from the 
  84. missile.  If you select the Attack command and specify a target, the 
  85. catapult will fire at the selected target regardless of friendly unit 
  86. proximity.
  87.  
  88. Summoned Creatures have a Magic Point (MP) bar as well as a
  89. Hit Point (HP) bar. The MP bar will degrade over time, and when it is 
  90. drained, the summoned creature will begin taking damage, as the powers 
  91. that hold it here are no longer in force.

  95. - 5.  ATTACK VS. MOVE
  96. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  97. When a Unit is instructed to Move, it will head to the selected location and 
  98. ignore anything that crosses it path, including units that attack it. This 
  99. allows for uninterrupted movement, as well as enforced retreats.
  100.  
  101. When a Unit is instructed to Attack, you may choose either an area to attack, 
  102. or a specific target.
  103.  
  104. When you choose an area to Attack, the unit will move there, but if he is 
  105. attacked in transit, the unit will stop and respond to the attack.  When the 
  106. unit arrives at the selected location, it will look for immediate targets 
  107. within its range to attack.
  108.  
  109. When you choose a specific target to Attack, your unit will move to engage 
  110. the selected target, ignoring all other enemies or threats.
  111.

  114. - 6.  NETWORK PLAY
  115. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  116. MESSAGES ON THE NETWORK
  117. Messages can be sent to an opposing player in a Two-Player game by simply 
  118. pressing the Enter key during gameplay. A MSG: prompt will appear at the
  119. bottom of the screen.  Type in your message, and then press Enter to send it.

  122. TWO PLAYER WARCRAFT
  123. Your CD-ROM enables you to play Warcraft with a friend who does NOT have a 
  124. copy of the game.  To play Warcraft with a friend over a modem or network,
  125. perform a PARTIAL or FULL INSTALL on one system and use the CD-ROM with any
  126. installation setting on the other system.  This will allow both systems to
  127. play against each other, though at least ONE system MUST have the CD.

  130. SELECTING UNITS IN TWO-PLAYER CUSTOM MODE
  131. In a Two-Player Custom game, players can either have the default setting
  132. of two Peons/Peasants or they can elect to create custom armies through 
  133. the Select Armies dialog.  Not only can you effect what units you are 
  134. choosing for your side, but you may select or deselect units for the 
  135. enemy side by using the mouse to click the arrow keys in the Unit Selection 
  136. area.  If you wish to negate the ability to create specific units, they 
  137. may be turned OFF in the same manner, making them unavailable for play.

  141. - 7.  MODEM PLAY
  142. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  143. For best performance you will want to disable compression and error control 
  144. on your modem.  Here are some init strings for popular modems that we have 
  145. found to work well.
  146.

  153. If your system does not run smoothly during MODEM or DIRECT LINK
  154. play, these are some suggestions which may help:
  155.  
  156.     * You can turn music OFF to increase game speed
  157.  
  158.     * Decreasing the BAUD rate may increase game speed
  159.  
  160.  
  161. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  162. - 8.  TROUBLESHOOTING
  163. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  164. Most systems should experience no difficulties running Warcraft.  
  165. However, a small percentage of systems may experience occasional
  166. system conflicts.  Many of these problems are quite easy to fix
  167. using the information provided below.  Before attempting to
  168. remedy any problem, we urge you to save your important system 
  169. files (AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS in particular) before making
  170. any modifications.  Please refer to your system's documentation
  171. before making any changes.
  172.  
  173. --------------
  174. Problem #1:
  175.     The SAVE/LOAD game feature doesn't work properly,
  176.     or causes my system to "freeze" occasionally.
  177. --------------
  178. If you have SMARTDRIVE installed with WRITE-CACHING, the SAVE/LOAD 
  179. feature may not work properly.  This is due to problems with
  180. SMARTDRIVE and DOS. Every version of SMARTDRIVE we have tested
  181. from v4.0 through v5.01 has write-caching conflicts.  Either disable 
  182. write-caching on the hard disk containing WAR.EXE or remove SMARTDRIVE
  183. altogether.

  185. Example:  if WAR.EXE is installed on the C: drive, try using the
  186. following command to remove write-caching:
  187.  
  188.     SMARTDRV C
  189.  
  190.  
  191. --------------
  192. Problem #2:
  193.     The install program cannot install the program
  194.     to my hard disk due to an error condition.
  195. --------------
  196. A SMARTDRIVE conflict is the most likely cause of this problem.  
  197. see the solution to Problem #1 above.
  198.  
  199. If you are using NDOS from SYMANTEC/Norton Utilites, the installer
  200. may be unable to copy Warcraft onto your hard disk.  Remove NDOS
  201. and try to install again.
  202.  
  203.  
  204. --------------
  205. Problem #3:
  206.     Warcraft occasionally "freezes" or displays irregular behavior.
  207. --------------
  208. EMM386.EXE is the most likely cause of irregular behavior.  There are
  209. several known problems with EMM386.EXE which prevent proper program
  210. operation.  We recommend trying the following alternatives:

  213.     * Run with HIMEM.SYS only (This will also speed 
  214.       your system performance).
  215.  
  216.     * Replace EMM386 with another memory manager, such 
  217.       as QEMM-386 or 386Max.
  218.  
  219.     * Run in a Windows DOS box.
  220.  
  221.     * Configure EMM386 with both the NOEMS and NOVCPI options.
  222.  
  223.     * Convert the DEVICEHIGH statements in your CONFIG.SYS to 
  224.       DEVICE statements, and remove the LH (Load High) commands
  225.       from your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  226.  
  227.  
  228. --------------
  229. Problem #4:
  230.     Warcraft does not work properly when I run it from a network drive.
  231. --------------
  232. Warcraft should run properly using most network cards.  A few network
  233. cards may cause sporadic crashes while running Warcraft.  Try
  234. playing Warcraft from the CD (MINIMAL install), or perform a PARTIAL
  235. or FULL install to your local hard disk.
  236.  
  237.  
  238. --------------
  239. Problem #5:
  240.     I have two monitors, and Warcraft runs very slowly on my system.
  241. --------------
  242. If you are using a monochrome monitor in addition to your VGA color monitor,
  243. the Diamond Stealth video card will cause the game to run very slowly.
  244. Other video cards may also display similar problems.  Removing the 
  245. monochrome card is highly recommended.

  247.  
  248. --------------
  249. Problem #6:
  250.     I don't have enough free memory to play Warcraft
  251. --------------
  252. Here are several solutions to increase your free memory:
  253.  
  254.    * Remove unneeded TSR programs from memory
  255.  
  256.    * Remove SMARTDRIVE, or reduce the size of its disk buffer
  257.  
  258.    * Run the memory optimizer that comes with your memory manager
  259.      (MemMaker for EMM386, Maximize for 386MAX, etc)
  260.  
  261. --------------
  262. Problem #7:
  263.     The installer told me I don't have enough disk space
  264. to install Warcraft
  265. --------------
  266. Before Warcraft is installed onto your hard disk, the installer will
  267. check to make sure there is enough free space available.  Some disk
  268. compression utilites like Stacker and DoubleSpace estimate the amount
  269. of free space available.  If that estimate is incorrect, the
  270. installer will not be able to properly complete its operation.
  271.  
  272. If the installer indicates that you do not have enough free disk
  273. space to complete the installation, you have the following options:
  274.  
  275.     * Free up more space on your hard disk by deleting unneeded files
  276.  
  277.     * Choose a Warcraft configuration which requires less disk space
  278.  
  279.  
  280. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  281. - 9.  MAKING YOUR SYSTEM RUN FASTER
  282. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  283. Adjust the speed using the Options Dialog or the + or - keys.
  284.  
  285. The EMM 386 memory manager (EMM386.EXE) slows the game speed of Warcraft
  286. considerably.  Use HIMEM.SYS only (without EMM386), or another memory 
  287. manager like QEMM or 386MAX to increase game speed.  Refer to your 
  288. DOS manual to change your memory configuration.  Also, please refer to 
  289. the notes regarding EMM386.EXE in the TROUBLESHOOTING section.
